Berikan Protein Initiative
In Indonesia, 84% have inadequate protein intake, while abundant marine resources are often underused or wasted, and many fishing communities face unstable incomes.
Expanding access to protein while supporting fishing communities
Berikan Protein Initiative is a women-led social enterprise transforming underutilised fish resources into affordable, high-quality blue protein. Founded by Maqbulatin Nuha, the venture is shaped by her own journey of resilience, education, and entrepreneurship, from growing up in Central Java. After seeing the disconnect between Indonesia’s rich marine resources, fishermen’s livelihoods, and persistent nutrition gaps, Maqbulatin started Berikan Protein to turn wasted potential into opportunity for coastal communities and consumers.
Innovative fisheries-driven solution
Berikan Protein upcycles low-economic-value fish into fish protein hydrolysate, a highly digestible, amino acid-rich powder that can be used in food, feed, and fertiliser. Its low-emission, circular production model uses existing marine resources instead of resource-intensive livestock systems, creating a more sustainable protein pathway.
The enterprise also develops fish-based dairy alternatives, including fish milk, while operating an end-to-end ecosystem from local sourcing to advanced processing and scalable fortification. Berikan Protein strengthens fishing communities by building a community-owned protein supply chain that increases income and expands access to affordable, nutritious food.
