Nearly 90% of India’s farmers work on small or marginal plots of land, yet they produce over half of the country’s food. Despite their vital role, many struggle to make ends meet. High input costs, limited access to infrastructure, and low crop yields hold them back from reaching their full potential.

Transforming energy poverty into agricultural potential
One of the most persistent barriers for farmers in India access to energy. Many farms are off-grid or poorly connected, forcing farmers to rely on expensive and polluting diesel to power their irrigation and processing needs.
Oorja Development Solutions was founded in 2016 to change that reality. As a farming-as-a-service company, Oorja provides solar-powered irrigation, milling, and cooling services to smallholder farmers in rural India. The company’s mission is to eliminate energy poverty in agriculture by replacing diesel with clean, affordable solar power.
Affordable solar power for farming communities
By offering its services on a pay-per-use basis, Oorja removes the upfront cost barrier that typically prevents low-income farmers from adopting solar technology. The company owns, operates, and maintains decentralised solar infrastructure at the farm level, enabling farmers to access critical services without having to invest in or manage the technology themselves. Tariffs are kept up to 50% lower than diesel-based alternatives, making clean energy economically viable for the most underserved farming communities.
Oorja’s services have helped farmers shift from growing only staple crops to cultivating high-value fruits, vegetables, and herbs. With year-round access to affordable irrigation, nearly half of Oorja’s users began cultivating a third cropping season in 2022. Oorja’s impact goes beyond energy access. The company provides climate-smart agricultural training to help farmers adopt sustainable practices such as organic pest management, composting, and the use of natural inputs.
Women are active participants in the Oorja’s ecosystem. Through its Krishi Sakhi program, Oorja has trained more than 65 rural women in sustainable agriculture and agri-business management, equipping them with the skills and confidence to lead within their communities.
