Komodo Water
Across Indonesia, millions of people still live without access to safe drinking water. In East Nusa Tenggara, one of the country’s most water-scarce regions, one in four households has no sustainable source of clean water.

Unlocking access to clean water in remote communities
In coastal and island communities like Papagarang village, families have historically depended on seawater or travelled hours to collect fresh water from the mainland, sacrificing time, energy, and health in the process.
In 2010, Shana Fatina founded Komodo Water to help change that. After witnessing the challenges firsthand during a visit to Papagarang, she set out to build practical, lasting water solutions for communities that had long been left behind. Today, Komodo Water provides clean, safe, and reliable water access to some of Indonesia’s most remote areas, with a focus on long-term sustainability and community ownership.
Building local capacity while strengthening community resilience
By combining solar-powered pumps, water well drilling, reverse osmosis, and end-to-end water management systems, Komodo Water transforms raw water sources, including seawater, into clean water for household and commercial use. These systems are particularly suited for regions without reliable access to electricity, making them an ideal fit for off-grid communities across the archipelago.
In addition to its water infrastructure projects, Komodo Water launched Indonesia’s first Water Data Platform, helping improve transparency and planning around water access. The data supports local governments, partners, and communities in managing resources more effectively and sustainably.
Women are also active participants in Komodo Water’s model. Many have become resellers of drinking water and ice blocks, generating new income and building financial independence. Meanwhile, local fishermen are being trained to operate and maintain water systems, gaining skills in water processing and creating new livelihood opportunities beyond traditional industries.
